BLOOMs afternoon: Breast cancer & Self care
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. At BLOOM we also want to pay attention to this subject. Join us on Sunday afternoon 8th of October for an informative afternoon dedicated to the topic where we shall highlight various aspects of care needed to cope with treatment and go through recovery. Everybody is welcome to join.
We will start this afternoon with a plenary session by Evelien Jonkers. She will tell about her own experience which is based on her own medical history, which among other things also includes breast cancer and brain damage. After the plenary part you can choose to join several sessions including ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine & cancer’, ‘EFT & Self hypnosis’ and ‘Pilates & recovery’. During the afternoon you can enjoy delicious, healthy bites and drinks.

Evelien Jonkers – Possibility coach
Evelien works as a coach for people who have to deal directly or indirectly with illness or disabilities. Part of her experience is based on her own medical history, which among other things also includes breast cancer and brain damage. During this session she’ll guide you through her story and why she did choose on several occasions for coaching, therapy, yoga or mindfullness as an addition next to the regular treatments. Get inspired by what the added value can be and how this can enrich your life.
TCM & cancer
Linda Chen – Traditional Chinese Medicine & acupuncture specialist

Pilates & recovery
Lucy Bosscher – Pilates teacher
- Breath. Deep lateral breathing through the rib cage help ease tension, encourage lymphatic drainage, and stretch tight areas affected by surgery
- Focus and Body Mind connection. Pilates principles help you live in the moment by keeping you focused on moving properly, with control and without momentum
- Accessibility and adaptability of the method. You can practice in many different positions: supine (on the back), prone (on the stomach), side-lying, standing, and seated.The exercises and equipment can be modified for any level. You will be able to use the affected arm(s) more easily and naturally because Pilates is a whole body exercise system that includes the arms and legs in the movements
- Another great benefit is : Pilates improves muscle proprioception (the reception of stimuli) and kinesthesia (awareness of the position and movement of the parts of the body by means of sensory organs) in the muscles and joints; these sensations are often lost after surgery, when nerves and muscles may have been inadvertently cut.

Evelien Jonkers – Possibility coach
Evelien will give a refreshing and inspiring view on how she dealt with breast cancer. Her story is not only intended for people who got diagnosed with cancer, it is as well intended for everyone who knows someone in their surrounding with cancer. The essence of her story is that she – whether she was angry, scared, happy or sad – always looked at what was possible and at things that were energizing. This made a huge difference in how she and her surrounding experienced the whole period of treatments: it gave and still gives strength. She had fun as well in between all treatments, e.g. when wearing an orange wig during the European Championship and she really enjoyed the moment she drove in a Ferrari. She will tell her story with support of her book that has recently been published “With one breast in a Ferrari”.
“My story will of course not exactly be your story. May be parts will help you to understand what someone else experiences when they have been diagnosed with cancer or may be it will be some recognition for you. I hope that the essence of my story will provide strength to you and your surrounding and that it will inspire you to choose for what yóu need, no matter what set back you’re dealing with.”

There’s only one person in the whole world who’s available to you 24 hours a day, who you should never let down and whom you’re stocked with 24/7. That’s you! You can hate or love it, but it’s a fact.
You don’t need to have MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) to talk to yourself. We all do it, one does it out loud, the other just recalls quietly inside; about our looks, behaviour, not performing enough, not being good enough, etc.
Conscious ánd subconscious we talk to ourselves. Or, better said, we hear ourselves and we hear voices from the past towards us and about us. Like coming from a kind of invisible records that make us act like an automatic pilot. And the more we want to be ourselves, during the years, the more these obsolete automatisms and programs are bothering us. And most of the time we only realise this when things go wrong; an accident, a disease, a loss.
